Have you ever woken up with a dull headache, knowing it could escalate into a full-blown migraine by lunchtime? For migraine sufferers, this scenario is all too real. The worst part is that migraine pain can leave you debilitated for hours or even days.
Understanding Headaches
Almost everyone experiences a headache at some point, but headaches vary widely. They can affect the entire head or a specific area and may feel like a dull ache or sharp stabbing. Headaches can last from a few minutes to several days and may produce side effects such as nausea. Causes include drug reactions, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), tight neck muscles, low blood sugar, high blood pressure, stress, and fatigue. Most headaches fall into one of two categories: tension (cervicogenic) headaches and migraine headaches. A less common type is cluster headaches, which are similar to migraines.
The Migraine Headache
Around 25 million people in the U.S. experience migraines each year, 75% of whom are women. Migraines are characterized by intense, throbbing pain, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light or noise. They can last a few hours to several days. Some sufferers experience a visual “aura,” such as flashing lights or dream-like visuals, signaling an impending attack.
Migraines often run in families and typically begin before age 30. Frequency varies, with some individuals experiencing multiple attacks per month and others perhaps once a year. Severity may also change with age.
During a migraine, blood vessels in the brain constrict, reducing blood flow and causing visual symptoms. When vessels dilate, the rapid increase in blood pressure produces the pounding headache. Triggers include lack of sleep, stress, flickering lights, strong smells, weather changes, and certain foods, particularly those containing the amino acid tyramine.
A Safe, Effective Natural Solution
The good news is that safe, effective natural solutions exist to reduce or eliminate headache symptoms, including the most debilitating migraines. Chiropractic care has been proven to alleviate tension and migraine headaches by improving posture, restoring joint range of motion, and stabilizing the body.
Chiropractic treatment reduces muscle tension and optimizes postural control of the head and neck, decreasing the workload muscles must exert to hold the head upright. Proper spinal alignment and muscle control give the body a better chance to avoid tension-induced headaches.
Many headache sufferers also rely on chest and shoulder breathing instead of diaphragmatic breathing, which repeatedly elevates shoulder and upper back muscles, increasing tension in the head and neck. Chiropractic care restores spinal, rib, and hip function to improve breathing, postural control, and overall body function.
