Winter is here! As we wrap up warm and enjoy the colder months, many of us experience low back and leg pain that can make daily activities uncomfortable and challenging.
Flagging the Pain Source
Your sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in your body, running from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down into the legs, controlling muscles and providing sensation to the thighs, legs, and soles of the feet. When this nerve becomes irritated, it can cause pain known as sciatica.
Sciatica describes the symptoms caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, rather than the underlying cause. Most commonly, it results from wear and tear rather than a specific injury, and is most often seen in people aged 30–50.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatic pain usually follows the path of the nerve, typically affecting one side of the body. Symptoms vary and may include tingling, aching, burning, numbness, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot. Pain often develops gradually and may worsen with sitting, bending, or sudden movements like sneezing or coughing.
Do I Have Sciatica?
A proper diagnosis begins with a thorough patient history and a physical and neurological examination. Our chiropractors focus on your spine and legs, assessing sensory and muscle strength, reflexes, and pain responses. In some cases, diagnostic imaging such as X-ray, MRI, or CT scan may be recommended to rule out more serious conditions.
Star Treatment Options
Conservative care, including chiropractic treatment, is highly effective for most people with sciatica. Each treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs and focuses on non-surgical, drug-free methods. Chiropractic care works to restore spinal alignment, improve movement, and reduce inflammation. Treatments may include:
- Spinal manipulation and adjustments
- Ice/heat therapy
- Ultrasound treatment
- TENS therapy
- Rehabilitative exercises
Preventing Sciatica
Benjamin Franklin said it best: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” To protect your back and prevent sciatica:
- Follow a healthy diet
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise regularly
- Practice proper posture
- Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest
- Quit smoking
- Use safe lifting techniques and good body mechanics
