Stages of Care – What is Involved?

Complete Chiropractic Care

The typical patient will experience three stages of care. The first stage focuses on symptomatic relief, such as reducing pain, stiffness, and other related discomforts quickly and effectively. The second stage addresses tissue healing, rehabilitation, and the full restoration of normal function and optimal spinal performance. The final stage involves ongoing periodic spinal care to prevent new injuries, minimise future flare-ups of existing conditions, and reduce the risk of long-term degenerative spinal processes while supporting overall health and wellbeing.

Comprehensive Chiropractic Care Path

Our approach to chiropractic care is structured to guide patients through a personalised journey toward lasting spinal health. Each stage of care is designed to address specific needs, from immediate relief to full rehabilitation and ongoing wellness maintenance, ensuring optimal outcomes and long-term wellbeing.

Relief care represents the initial stage of treatment for most patients. The primary goal at this stage is to provide symptomatic relief. Treatments focus on techniques and therapies that most effectively and efficiently reduce pain and discomfort, allowing patients to continue with their daily activities. While patients are generally advised to “take it easy,” they are encouraged to remain mobile and functional, provided there is no risk of further injury or tissue damage.

The second stage of care focuses on addressing the underlying problems that caused and contributed to the condition, while also healing and rehabilitating the affected tissues. Without these interventions, a favourable outcome is unlikely, and future recurrences may occur. It is crucial that patients follow the chiropractor’s instructions during this stage. Tissues and structures that are not fully healed and rehabilitated remain vulnerable to future problems. Adhering to appointments, completing home exercises, and following all other recommendations helps ensure optimal recovery. Patients should also be aware that even after pain and discomfort have subsided, tissue healing and functional correction may still be incomplete and require additional treatment.

Once spinal tissues are healed and spinal biomechanics have normalised, patients are recommended to continue with periodic spinal checkups. For some, this may be once per year; for others, it may be monthly or more frequent. Chiropractic spinal checkups provide similar benefits to the spine as dental checkups provide for teeth: identifying minor problems before they develop into significant pain, discomfort, or irreversible tissue damage. Like heart conditions, irreversible spinal damage often occurs before symptoms of pain or discomfort become apparent.
