Chiropractic – What is a Subluxation?

A subluxation, as defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, is: “A subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health.”

When a subluxation occurs, it causes nerve interference in the portion of the body affected by those nerves. The subluxation leads to changes in both the structure and the nerves. These changes progressively worsen over time if the subluxated area of the spine is left uncorrected.

This process results in ongoing degeneration, commonly referred to as subluxation degeneration. Over time, the affected joints and surrounding tissues undergo gradual structural and functional decline, leading to stiffness, reduced mobility, and compromised nervous system function. The body often adapts to these changes silently, meaning many individuals may not even notice symptoms until the degeneration has progressed significantly.

By carefully analyzing the type, severity, and extent of these changes, chiropractors can reasonably estimate how long subluxations have been present within the spine. This insight not only provides a clearer picture of the spine’s current health but also helps in developing an effective, personalized care plan.

Having this knowledge is invaluable, as it allows both the chiropractor and the patient to understand the time, consistency, and level of effort that will be required for meaningful correction and long-term spinal health restoration. In many cases, early detection and timely chiropractic intervention can help slow or even reverse certain aspects of subluxation degeneration, supporting better overall function and improved quality of life.

Important Notice: The General Chiropractic Council currently states that the term “Vertebral Subluxation Complex” (and any variation, such as “subluxation”) is considered a historical and theoretical model. There is no clinical research evidence to support claims that it is the cause of disease or health concerns.

This page is provided for information purposes only. However, as 97% of chiropractors worldwide still recognize and use the term Vertebral Subluxation Complex, we believe it is important to include this information here.
